It is with heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of John Frederick “Fred’ Jessome, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, who departed this life on August 14, 2025, at the age of 72.
Born on August 28, 1952, in North Sydney, Fred was the son of the late Chalmers and Nina.
Fred grew up knowing the value of hard work and family. Fred began his career as a coal miner — He wore his work with quiet pride, providing for his family with unwavering strength and determination. Beyond the mines, Fred’s spirit thrived in the outdoors. He had a profound love for gardening — his garden was a place of peace, patience, and joy. He had a deep love for hiking, hunting, and exploring the beauty at Amy’s. Fred felt most at home outside. His adventurous spirit and appreciation for the outdoors were a way of life that inspired those around him to slow down, breathe deep, and embrace the world beyond the beaten path.
Perhaps more than anything, Fred will be remembered as a devoted grandfather. He filled our lives with warmth, laughter, and stories — some true, some not, and all unforgettable. His legacy lives on in the lessons he taught: to be brave, to be kind, and to always take time to plant something that will grow.
Fred is survived by his children, Brian (Cara), Freddie and Barbie; grandchildren Cynthia, Cameron, Samantha, Victoria, Marissa, Bradley, Brian, Ella, and great grandchild Neveah; sisters Patsy & Lois; wife of many years Tonia, as well as many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind countless friends, neighbors, and loved ones whose lives he touched with his gentle wisdom and generous heart.
Fred was predeceased by his brother Billy and his beloved grandson Brody, whose light, though brief, burned brightly in every life he touched. Brody, a kind and courageous soul, left this world far too soon, yet he never strayed far from his papa’s heart.
A celebration of his life will be held from 4-6 pm, August 28, 2025, at the Frenchvale Fire Department, 756 Frenchvale Road, Balls Creek. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you plant a tree, share a story, or take a walk outside — just as Fred would have wanted.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Online condolences can be left for the family on the tribute wall of the obituary.
