John "Jack" Evans Obituary

John “Jack” Evans

North Sydney/Sydney

With heartfelt sadness we announce the sudden passing of our dad, John “Jack” Walter Evans, age 87, on Sunday, July 19, 2020 at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney.

Born in North Sydney on January 15, 1933, he was the son of the late John and Sarah (Cox) Evans.  For many years Jack lived on Lorne Street and was employed with R. Jabalee & Sons Grocery Store retiring after 34 years.  Dad’s happiest times were any time he was with his family especially at Christmas time, having the enthusiasm and anticipation of a kid waiting for Santa but waking us all at 5 a.m. to see if Santa came usually got him in trouble with Mom.  He made every occasion like Christmas.  In later years Dad who never drove could be seen on his daily walk around town or heard in his apartment always singing along to his favorite hymns.

Elder and envelope secretary for many years as well as serving on numerous committees at St. Giles Presbyterian Church in North Sydney.  He loved being part of the St. Giles family.  He was a Montreal Canadiens fan for life, something he and Rev. Ritchie Robinson of St. Giles had in common and usually had a chuckle over during hockey season.

He is survived by his children, daughter Linda (Dave) Dicks, Dartmouth, his two sons John (Anne) Evans, Leduc, AB, Scott Evans, Sydney, five grandchildren Jay (Deanna) Evans, Shannon (Nathan) Doyle, Jennifer Dicks (Jenn), Melissa Evans (Patrick), Jacob Evans, three great-grandchildren Steven & Anna Evans, Brooklynn Doyle; also surviving is his brother Fred (Marion) Evans, Dartmouth, sisters-in-law Bernice, Yvonne and Betty Ferguson, many nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by his companion Gertie Whitty whom he loved spending time with especially watching The Young and the Restless.  Thank you to the entire Whitty family for welcoming Dad into their family and sharing many wonderful times.

A very special thank you to Suzanne Whitty for everything she did for Dad over the past number of years especially for all the beautiful meals and treats but most importantly the visits he looked so forward to.

Besides his parents, Jack was predeceased by his wife of fifty years, June (Ferguson) Evans, brothers; James (Evelyn) Evans, Robert Evans and Terry Evans, sister; Ella Sherfey.

Many thanks to the staff at Soldiers Cove at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, especially Rose, Valerie, Danette and Kathy for their care and compassion.

There will be no visitation or service at this time.  A memorial service will be held at a later date under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Giles Presbyterian Church or a charity of choice.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com.

He asked for so little but gave so much
