Jonathan Robert Grist passed away on December 6, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with kidney disease.
Born June 27, 1984, Jonathan was on the move from the moment he could walk. He had an adventurous spirit and deep love for the water and the outdoors. Hunting brought him joy, but fishing was his true passion. Whether he was out on the water hauling and setting traps, long lining, or casting a lure along the shores of the Bras d’Or, Jonathan was never happier then when he was surrounded by nature. He also had a natural gift for mechanics, if something was broke Jay could fix it.
Jonathan is survived by his amazing children Jeremy and Brooklynn, and their mother Heather. Jay was so proud of his children, his face lit up when he spoke about them and they were his greatest joy.
He will be loving remembered his parents Mavis (John Gillis) and Mark (Mary Grist); his grandmother Ellen MacKinnon; sisters Katie and Allison (Andrew Harris) and his niece Rori. He is also remembered by his best friend Joe and special friend Amy.
Jonathan was predeceased by his grandparents John Francis MacKinnon and Robert and Patrica Grist.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a visitation for Jonathan from 2-4 and 7-9 pm, Thursday, December 18, 2025, at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Online condolences can be left for the family on the tribute wall of the obituary.
“Fair winds and following seas. May you always find a fish waiting for you, whenever you cast your line”.
