It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, nephew and friend Joseph Dowling, age 70, on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. 

Born in North Sydney on January 23, 1949, he was the son of the late Hugh and Cora (Hatcher) Dowling.  Joe served in the Canadian Armed Forces, then worked at Devco until his retirement due to illness.  He also worked as a commissionaire for a period of time.  Joe loved to spend his summers at the golf course with his friends.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 19 in North Sydney.

He is survived by his wife, the love of his life for 47 years, Evelyn (Hawley) Dowling, his daughters Sheri (Shawn), Rhonda (James), his grandchildren Ryan (Tiffany), Tyler, Mariah (Trey), his great-grandchildren Jack, Gerard, Alexis, Drew and Preston.  Also surviving are his brothers Hughie John and Bobby, his special aunt and uncle, Ray and Georgina Dowling, who he considered his parents, his cousin Jack Bennett, who he called his brother, his best friends Doug MacDonald, Jackie Hurd and Blaine Cooke.  He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Alex (Billie), Bobby (Alice), Cecil (Dana) Hawley, Paul Coulet and fur babies Shylo and Rocky.

Besides his parents, Joe was predeceased by an infant brother Kenneth, his grandparents Jack and Margaret Dowling, Alex and Elsie Hatcher and mother and father-in-law Nellie and Paul Coulet.

The family would like to thank Arthena Webster for always being there for us, Dr. Peter Poulos, Dr. Paul Morrison and staff of the CCU at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. 

By request cremation has taken place.  A funeral service for Joe will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating.  Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.
