Judith “Judy” Mae Quinn
North Sydney
We regret to announce the passing of Judith “Judy” Mae Quinn-Jardine age 74, on Thursday August 11, 2022 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, NS.
Judy was born in North Sydney, June 12, 1948, the only daughter of Elmer “Tim” Quinn and Ann (MacNeil) Quinn of North Sydney. Judy graduated from St. F.X. University in 1969 with a B.S.A. degree and worked for the Attorney General Department in Halifax until 1970. She then returned to St. F.X. and graduated in 1971 with a B.B.E. degree. Judy began her teaching career at Thompson High School, North Sydney in 1971. Later at the Nova Scotia Eastern Tech in 1972, before moving to Halifax, where she taught at J.L. Ilsley School for three years until 1975-76.
With the opening of Memorial High School in 1976 she taught there for 27 years retiring in 2003. During her tenure at Memorial, there was a two year break when she went to Baddeck Elementary, where she taught grade two, which she enjoyed greatly and spoke of often. It also was the same grade that her mother had taught in North Sydney for her entire career in teaching. In total Judy taught for 32 years.
Judy had many interests and pastimes during her life. She was a smooth skater with her racers, loved to ski, enjoyed swimming at beaches all over Cape Breton, she was a daily walker, walking one to two miles every day, yoga and exercise classes. She was also an accomplished artist with many of her pictures hanging in our home. Her gardening expertise is evident inside and outside our house with blooms everywhere. In addition to this we travelled to many areas and countries. We visited Spain, England, Scotland her favourite Ireland (Quinn), many states in the USA especially California, Maine and Florida, Barbados every year and our Canada. We never took tours but rented a car and off we’d go, usually not booking a place to stay until we found a town we liked. In edition to this we really liked to go out with the top down in our 1972 MGB, on day trips around Cape Breton.
In sports Judy favoured the Montreal Canadiens and I the Detroit Red Wings, but agreed on the Blue Jays, Raptors and Eagles.
In life we had a great marriage. We laughed, we talked, we held hands, danced to tunes we liked on the radio, understood each other without a word, only a look, we never had an argument over thirty-two years. Now she is in heaven, with my heart, waiting for me later on. And we will be together again.
Judy is survived by her husband Rufus Robert “Bob” Jardine, her brother and sister-in-law Donnie and Ann Quinn, stepchildren Tim and Lori Beth Jardine and step grandson Ashlyn Jardine, also in-laws Barbara and Rob North, Celia and Vince Gillis and Peter and Brenda Jardine.
I would like to thank the staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Ward 3B and the I.C.U. Department for their terrific care and treatment of Judy. I would especially like to thank nurse Candice and Dr. Kabi for their care with Judy throughout her stay in the I.C.U.
Visitation for Judy will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating.
Judy loved flowers so they would be appreciated. If a donation is preferred the Northside Harbourview Hospital Foundation is suggested. Online condolences may be sent to the family by posting a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
