Born November 4, 1930 in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Hillary and Adele (Poirier) Merritt.

Kelvin was a well-known businessman in North Sydney operating his downtown barber shop for many years, retiring in 1995.

Kelvin loved all kinds of fishing, summer and winter.  He was an avid harness racing fan and enjoyed travelling with friends to PEI for the annual Gold Cup and Saucer races. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council 2024 in Sydney Mines.

Kelvin is survived by his son Jim (Debi) Merritt, Sydney Mines, daughters, Marilyn Merritt and Juliette Merritt (Robert), both of Havre Boucher and their mother, Shirley (Brown) Yetter, Havre Boucher; his grandchildren, Keri Merritt, Chris Merritt, Colin Cross, Luca Fabbian and Finn Neal, step grandchildren, Robbie Hollingsworth, Bobbi-Jo Green and their families. Also surviving are his brother, Billy (Emma) Merritt, Sydney Mines; three sisters, Enid Williams, Jacqueline Armstrong both of North Sydney and Delores (Ernie) Tobin of Ontario.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by four sisters, Geraldine, Pauline, Elaine and Bernadette.

The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Michel McKeough and Louise, as well as the staff of the Northside Community Guest Home for the care given to Kelvin.

There will be no visitation by request. A funeral mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
