Laura Smith Obituary

Laura Mae Smith  RN

North Sydney

It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Laura Smith, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at the Northside General Hospital with her daughter Louise by her side.

Laura was born on October 11, 1936 and was the fifth child born to William and Rachel (MacQuarrie) Probert.  Laura graduated as a registered nurse from St. Elizabeth Hospital in North Sydney.  Her nursing career spanned well over 40 years beginning at the hospital, but she is most lovingly remembered as the family practice nurse for Dr. Hugh Kirkpatrick, Dr. John Kirkpatrick and Dr. Stephanie Langley.  As a nurse Laura did more than just “a job”.  She knew the patients personally and went above what may have been expected to support and advocate for their health care needs.  She will be especially remembered and appreciated by many for her amazing skills for giving “painless needles”.

Laura was a longtime faithful member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church in North Sydney and enjoyed many years serving on the ladies auxiliary.  Laura was a lifelong lover and follower of curling.  She spent many years curling and was a member of the Seaview Curling Club in North Sydney.  Over the years, she was able to attend some of curling’s biggest events and in later years she loved analyzing the play and cheering on her favorite teams from home.

Above all, Laura loved her family.  Laura was the foundation and the “glue” that kept everyone close.  Her family was always her number one priority.  Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her tremendous joy and there was nothing she wouldn’t do for them…and nothing they wouldn’t do for her.

Laura will be deeply missed by her daughter and best friend Louise, her grandchildren Stephanie, Kathryn, Brett and Amy and their mother Jennifer; great-grandchildren Aidan and Gavin; brother Billy Probert; brother-in-law Jerry Smith; sister-in-law Nancy Smith, nieces and nephews and her furry family Mikki, Stripes and Bonnie.

Laura was predeceased by her husband Gordon, her son Paul, her sister Janet Probert and brothers Alexander and Donald.

Visitation for Laura will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Monday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  Funeral service to be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Matthew Wesley United Church Hall with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.

Covid-19 restrictions will be in place with Proof of Vaccination, NS Government Photo ID, the wearing of masks and limited seating in the church hall for the service.

Since Laura loved flowers, they would be welcomed and appreciated at this time.  Memorial donations may be made to St. Matthew Wesley United Church.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com.
