It is with deepest sorrow that we the family announce the passing of Layton “Whitey” MacKinnon, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, neighbour and friend on Saturday December 6, 2025 at the age of 85.
Born in North Sydney on November 30, 1940, he was the son of the late Reginald and Amelia (Gordon) MacKinnon. Layton was well known in the trucking industry where his career led him to travel the country for nearly 70 years.
He was a true gentleman, friend and had the kindest soul. He was always ready to hold a door for someone or lend a hand whenever and wherever he could. He was an avid and attentive gardener, taking meticulous care of his property and always willing and able to help his neighbours with theirs. Most important in his life however, was his family, to whom he dedicated so much of himself. Layton met his soulmate Marilyn on a bicycle outside the North Sydney post office. She was 14 and he was 16. They were a beautiful team who supported each other for all of their lives.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Marilyn (Andrews); his children, Ed (Shauna) MacKinnon of Howie Center, and Beth (Sheldon) Duffy of Fort MacMurray; grandchildren - Mason MacKinnon, Dalyce MacKinnon (David MacNeil), Sarah Duffy (Justin Greening) and Hannah Duffy. He is also survived by his sister Sue Currie.
Besides his parents, Layton was predeceased by his brother, William.
Visitation for Layton will be held from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm on Friday, December 12, 2025, at the W. J. Dooley Funeral Home at 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral service will be held at 12 pm, Saturday, December 13, in the W. J. Dooley Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating. A reception will follow the service at the Clansman Motel, North Sydney. Online condolences can be left for the family by writing on the tribute wall of the obituary page.
We would like to thank all of the people involved with Layton’s care. Special thanks to Layton’s friend Donnie MacNeil.
