Lillian Joyce Matthews

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lillian Matthews, aged 78, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, on September 27, 2024. She was born on February 9, 1946 in New Waterford.

Lillian was a kind hearted and generous person, eager to do more for others before thinking of herself. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo, and loved going out to dances in town. Her family was her most cherished possession, especially her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lillian is survived by her children – Crystal (Melvin) Gerrow, Kathy Matthews, Billy Matthews, Juanita Matthews, and Jason Matthews, along with her 25 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Jim Matthews (known to many as Diamond Jim), as well as her children Jimmy and Lorraine.

A visitation will be held for Lillian from 1 to 3 pm on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at 3 pm of the same day in the funeral home chapel with Patrick O’Neill officiating.
