Lois Nicholson Obituary

Lois Aileen Nicholson

North Sydney

It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, Lois Aileen Nicholson, at the age of 86, on Monday, October 17, 2022 at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney where she resided for the past several months.

Lois was born in Sydney on September 22, 1936 to the late John “Jack” and Sarah (MacPherson) Morrison. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.   Lois married Ray Nicholson on October 7, 1967; they remained inseparable until his passing in March of this year.  They shared many common interests and were devoted to their family and community for the 55 years they were together.

Lois was a faithful and dedicated member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney.  She sang in the choir from a young age and performed countless special numbers with Ray and other members of the church choir over a lifetime of involvement.   Lois had a lovely alto voice and was often invited to join other choirs for cantatas and special musical events.  She performed with combined choirs for large Cape Breton celebrations, such as the Canada Games ceremonies, and was well known in the broader church choir community.   Lois sang in the Boularderie Lakeview Choir for a number of years and enjoyed the variety of music and new friends she met through that experience.

Lois was active in all aspects of church life.  She served on many committees including Trustees, Board of Stewards, Session, Ministry and Personnel, to name just a few. She enjoyed the social aspects of all her volunteer work, whether it was helping with a yard sale, counting collection, cleaning at the church or her time in the U.C.W.   Lois was active with the Liberal party and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, North Sydney Garden Club and Senior Citizens and Pensioners’ Club.

Lois had boundless energy and a terrific sense of humour, often laughing at herself but never at the expense of others.  She enjoyed dancing, singing, and travel with her family but mostly spending time visiting and laughing with friends.  The family is grateful for the dedication of her exceptional caregivers:  the two Denise’s, Mary Rose, Brenda and Jessica and as well as caring friend and loving neighbour, Anne MacEachern. We are indebted to the staff at Irish Cove, who all made Lois feel loved until the very end.

Lois is survived by her two daughters:  Judy Nicholson, Slave Lake, Alberta and Tanya Nicholson (Chris Ipe), Halifax, and three grandchildren: Kyle Swift, and Paul and Rachel Ipe.  She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Alexander Nicholson and sister-in-law, Shirley Hart, both of Middle River, and sisters-in-law Irene Nicholson and Marie Nicholson, both of Baddeck.  She will be remembered fondly by her many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents Lois was predeceased by her husband Ray Nicholson, her brother Jim Morrison and his wife, Florence, brothers-in-law John, Allan (Alice and Mabel), Barbara, Irvin, and Donald Nicholson and Wayne Hart.

Visitation for Lois will be held from 7-9 pm on Saturday, October 22nd and from 2-4 pm on Sunday, October 23rd at W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Monday October 24th at St. Matthew Wesley United Church, Leitches Creek, with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating. Internment in Middle River will occur at a later date.  Memorial donations can be made to St. Matthew Wesley United Church or the Alzheimers Society.  Online condolences can be sent to the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
