Margaret MacLean Obituary

Margaret MacLean

Cape Dauphin

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and aunt Margaret MacLean, age 97, on Thursday, November 4, 2021 at Alderwood Guest Home in Baddeck.

Born in Cape Dauphin on December 22, 1923, Margaret was the daughter of the late Dan Alex and Catherine “Cassie” (MacRae) Clark. She lived all her life in Cape Dauphin and was proud of it, where the tea pot was always on and always welcoming to anyone who came to visit.  A woman of faith, she was an active member of St. John’s United Church in Big Bras d’Or where she was an elder and served on numerous boards within the church. She enjoyed her Monday and Thursday night card games and her Thursday afternoons with the Golden Girls bridge group. She loved doing crosswords and was an enthusiastic supporter at her kids and grand kids hockey games. Most of all she loved spending time with her family at the Cape.  Margaret had a strong faith in God and it was that faith that helped her through many struggles and great losses throughout her long life.  Margaret was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She is survived by her children, Carol MacAulay (the late Mervyn), Kathy (Ernie) MacIntosh, Sally (Norman) MacDonald, Allan (Barbara) MacLean, Buddy (Maria) MacLean, her 12 grandchildren Stewart, Wanda, Kenneth, Robert, Ann Margaret, David, Kyle, Courtney, Ashley, Bradley, Matthew and Daniel, her 25 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.  Also surviving are special nieces and nephews A.J., Jim, Debbie and Boxer, and sister-in-law Kaye Clarke.

Besides her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her first husband Stewart MacDonald, her second husband Robert MacLean, her brothers Buddy, A.J. and Leslie, her son-in-law Mervyn MacAulay, and special friend and card partner, Theresa MacDermid.

Special thanks from the family to our “Newfoundland Angels” Marie Chant and Verna Savoury, to Dr. Chow, Dr. Garcia and the staff at Victoria County Memorial Hospital and Alderwood Rest Home who we will be forever grateful.

Visitation for Margaret will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  A funeral service with limited seating will be held on Tuesday at 2pm at St. John’s United Church, Big Bras d’Or with Diane Kempt officiating. Burial will follow in New Campbellton Cemetery, New Campbellton.

Covid-19 restrictions will be followed with proof of vaccination and the wearing of masks required at both the funeral home and the church.

Memorial donations may be made to Victoria County Memorial Hospital, St. John’s United Church or New Campbellton Cemetery.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com.
