Margaret "Peggy" Wilkie Obituary

Margaret “Peggy” Wilkie

North Sydney

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Peggy (Smith) Wilkie, our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, on Friday May 10, 2019 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born in North Sydney, December 9, 1931, Peggy was the daughter of the late Robert B. and Helen (Bigney) Smith. She was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.

Peggy will be greatly missed by her children, Nancy (Brian) Young, North Sydney, Robert (Susan) Wilkie, Grand River, Lloyd (Lynn) Wilkie, Janet Wilkie, both of North Sydney, Trevor (Pauline) Wilkie, Grand Greve, seven grandchildren Jodi (Doug) Reid, Brianne Young, Andrew (Maria) Young, Alex Napier, Shane (Alysha) Wilkie, Holly (Paul) Wilkie, Trent Wilkie great granddaughter Philly Reid, brothers David Smith, Delaware, Bruce (Carol) Smith, Edmonton, James (Mary) Smith, Kempt Head, sister-in-law Emily Smith, brother-in-law Stewart Wilkie, daughters of the heart, Judy (Sam) Hayes and Arlene Tobin, several nieces and nephews, lifelong friends Betty MacDonald and Marilyn Brown and the many dear friends she made in enriched housing.

Mom was predeceased by her husband Lloyd Wilkie, longtime companion Ivan Aitkens, grand daughter Carmen Young, grandson Nicholas Young, great grandson Davy Reid, sister Roberta Sicotte, brothers Norman Smith and Kenneth in infancy.

Mom was a universal mother, caring for any and all kids and pets that came across her path. She was known to pile all the neighbourhood kids into a taxi to go to Indian Beach for the day, bringing sandwiches and Kool-aid for all. Widowed at 36, Mom raised and educated her own five children and was instrumental in the upbringing of her beloved grandchildren. She would lay down her life for her family and was so very, very proud of them.

Mom had the greatest sense of humour and was always the life of the party. She made friends wherever she went, and loved to be the first to know all the details of any news going on in town. Her interests, which did not include housekeeping, were wide ranging -

bowling, darts, knitting, gardening, reading and watching “her stories”, figure skating and curling. She was a wonderful cook and her baking was legendary. She enjoyed being outdoors and spent some of her happiest days out at the trailer with her soulmate Ivan.

Mom was not afraid to learn new things, earning her drivers license at age 60 and picking up electronic technologies along the way. Most recently she became a huge fan of Facebook, where she would give encouraging and endearing comments on everything, especially her kids’ and grandkids’ achievements. She had the biggest heart and wanted everyone to feel seen, included and valued. She was a good, kind, beautiful person, and she will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by us all.

Visitation for Peggy Wilkie will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday (today) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Church, with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
