It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Marie Porter (Buffett), aunt, great-aunt, great-great aunt and friend on Thursday, August 10, 2023. 

Born in North Sydney on April 17, 1930, Marie was the last remaining child of Theophilus and Elizabeth (Strong) Buffett.  She was predeceased by her brothers Tom, Dick and Frank and sisters Esther Dunlap, Mabel Shanks, Yvonne Witter and Elizabeth (Bette Joe) O’Keefe, who was her travel and shopping partner.

Marie was a nurse and enjoyed a career in public health in New Waterford, but her heart was in history and regretted that she had not become a teacher.  She enjoyed telling stories to her great-great niece and nephew Zoe and Cohen MacIsaac about the family history dating back to the Vikings.  She also had strong views on religion, politics, the Royal Family, and enjoyed a “lively debate” on any topic.  Although her eyesight had diminished so that she could no longer drive, read her favourite books or her newspapers, she enjoyed talking back to the politicians on the television, especially Donald Trump.  She had an amazing memory, which was instrumental in gathering information about the family tree.  She travelled to Europe but her best trips always involved shopping with her sister Bette Joe throughout Canada and the United States.

Marie is survived by her nephew Dave (Martha) O’Keefe, Leitches Creek, her nieces Nancy (Reg) MacIsaac, Westmount and Wendy (Ron Williams) Boutilier, Leitches Creek; great-nephew Chris (Natalie) MacIsaac and their children Zoe and Cohen; great-niece Janet Langer and her children Dakota and Brody.  She is also survived by an extended family of many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews throughout Canada.  Special mention to her neighbor and friend Josephine MacLeod, who was always available for a cup of tea and a chat.  Marie also enjoyed the company and antics of her two furry housemates Bella and Peppercorn.

The family would like to thank the staff of MacGillivray Guest Home for their care and compassion for Marie over the past number of years.

A private family service for Marie will be held at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney, with Marjorie Serafinus officiating.  Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.  Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Wildlife Association or the local chapter of the SPCA.  Online condolences may be left for the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
