Mary Katrynuk Obituary

With broken hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Mary Katrynuk, on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at the age of 85, at Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck.

Born on June 21, 1940, in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Mary was the cherished daughter of the late Thomas and Georgina (Chambers) Lawless.

Mary devoted her life to caring for others. After graduating from St. Elizabeth’s in North Sydney as a Registered Nurse, she spent her career serving communities across Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Ontario. Nursing was not just her profession but her calling—an extension of her gentle, selfless spirit.

This year, Mary and her devoted husband, Harry Katrynuk, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Their love story was one of true partnership, built on respect, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Harry was the love of her life, and together they created a home filled with warmth, welcome, and unconditional love.

Family was the very heart of Mary’s life. Nothing brought her greater joy than having her loved ones gathered under one roof. The famous Thanksgiving dinners in Baddeck, lovingly hosted by her sister Renee, were more than a meal – they were a celebration of love, togetherness, and tradition. Though she will be dearly missed, her family will carry on these traditions in her honor.

Mary was also blessed with incredible talents. She had a gift for woodworking, crafting, and making teddy bears - each creation infused with her care and thoughtfulness. Her hands-built things of beauty, but more importantly, they built comfort and love for those around her.

Mary leaves behind her beloved husband Harry; her dear siblings Gerald (Mary) Lawless, Linda (Daryl) Rendell, Renee (Mark) Romanowsky, Mick (Bonnie) Lawless, Tish Lawless, and Sue (Kenny) Leblanc. She is also lovingly remembered by Harry’s siblings Ralph, William (Lynda), and sister-in-law Micheline. Her many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and extended family, who all adored their Aunt Mary, and will carry her love in their hearts.

Mary’s reunion in heaven is as important as those she leaves behind. She is predeceased by her loving parents, Thomas and Georgina; her brother Ed Lawless; and her dear sisters Jean Farrell, Susan Howley, Elizabeth, and Marina. She is also reunited with her parents-in-law, Bill, and Katie Katrynuk; her brother- and sister-in-law, Richard and Irene. Knowing they are together again is bringing comfort to those who grieve her here.

Mary’s legacy is one of love, kindness, and devotion. She taught us the importance of family, of caring for others, and of creating beauty in everyday life. Her heart was big enough to hold everyone close, and her memory will forever remain a blessing.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Alderwood Rest Home for their care and compassion over the past two years. Donations in Mary’s memory may be made to a charity of your choosing.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A service to celebrate Mary’s life will be held at a later date. Online condolences can be left for the family on the tribute wall of her obituary.
