It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mary Mathilda (White) MacDonald Spencer, on Saturday, August 22, 2020, mom passed in her 99th year (sorry Mom, your age was top secret but we are so proud of you) at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney with her loving family by her side. 

Born in North Sydney on April 10, 1922, Mary was the daughter of the late Ambrose and Mary Ann (Murphy) White.  In her earlier years Mary was employed as a secretary at the Sydney Steel Plant and later at St. Elizabeth and Northside General Hospitals in medical records and the outpatient departments, retiring in 1986.  She was member of the CWL in North Sydney and Sydney Mines for 50 years.  She was an avid bridge player, avid reader, enjoyed quilting, sewing and swimming.  She also loved playing bingo and she won last week!  Mary was the last surviving member of the White family from New Waterford. 

Mary is survived by her children Patricia (Robert) Ben, Tamworth, ON,  Angela (Reg) Farrell, Goulds, NL., William MacDonald, North Sydney, Gail (John) Parsons, Bras d’Or, Raymond (Barbara) MacDonald, Edmonton, AB, Mary Arlene (Jim) Aitken, Hinton, AB, step-son Steve (Barbara) Spencer, Oshawa, ON; step son-in-law Earl Boutilier, North Sydney; her 17 grandchildren Robbie, Suzanne Ben, Kent, Colleen, Kelda Farrell, John, Melissa, Craig Parsons, Raymond, Sasha MacDonald, Necha, James Aitken, step grandchildren Jenna, Danny Spencer, Graham Boutilier and Paul MacDonald, also by 25 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. 

She was predeceased by her two husbands Bill MacDonald and Patrick Spencer, a grandson Ryan Parsons, two step-daughters Mary Ann MacDonald and Patricia Boutilier;  by her siblings Otto (Jessie), Joseph (Annie), Margaret (Gus) and Essie (Tom).

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Northside Community Guest Home.

There will be no visitation.  Due to current covid-19 restrictions, a funeral mass for Mary will be celebrated at a later date. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  Memorial donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation or a charity of choice.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com.
