Mary "Dolena" (O'Toole) Campbell

Mary Dolena Campbell died peacefully on Tuesday, July 22nd, in her 88th year. 

Born in February 1938, Dolena was the daughter of the late Timothy and Dollie O’Toole. Dolena is survived by her children Tracy (Wayne Munro), Todd, Jamie (Katie) and her six grandchildren who were the light of her life – Chris (Sarah), Josh, Jessica (Colin), Lauren, Hannah, and Emmery. She is also survived by her brother Bill O’Toole (Millville) and sister Margorie Bennett (Brantford, Ontario), as well as her beloved nieces and nephews near and afar. She had fond memories of her extended family on Dad’s side and was always delighted to see them when they stopped in to visit. 

Besides her parents, Dolena was predeceased by her husband of over 30 years, Lloyd Francis Campbell, and her siblings Wilfred, Gordon, Roderick and John O’Toole, Jean Baker, Annie Pate and Ida Glinksky. 

Mom and dad settled on their dairy farm in Millville, which had previously been operated by her parents. Mom served as the bookkeeper and took care of the home while dad worked outside. She looked forward to every summer when her brothers and sisters came to visit from Ontario – the house would be full of laughter and fun times, making it seem as though they were all back to being kids again in the farmhouse where they grew up. 

Late in life Dolena returned to work with H&R Block in North Sydney, where she worked until her mid-seventies. It brought her great joy every year as tax season approached. 

Dolena was a member of the St. Joseph Church in Bras d’Or for her entire life, and thoroughly enjoyed her time volunteering with the CWL.  She was also a member of the Bras d’Or Seniors Club and TOPS. 

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am, Wednesday, July 30, at St. Joseph Church in Bras d’Or. Burial will follow in the Church cemetery. Arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  Donations in Dolena’s memory can be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.
