Mary Georgina "Gina" Burton Obituary

With broken hearts and profound sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Mary Georgina (Beaton) Burton, affectionately known as Gina, on April 15, 2025. She was a devoted wife, best friend, soul mate, and the heartbeat of her beloved husband, Blair. Their love was the kind that others admired—genuine, fun, and unwavering. She will continue to walk beside him every day in his heart and in the beautiful memories they created together.

Born in North Sydney on November 17, 1964, Gina was the cherished daughter of the late George and Catherine (Broderick) Beaton, and the beloved sister of Gloria (Adrian) Blinkhorn, who lived next door. Their closeness was a lifelong comfort.

After a valiant 46‑year battle with cancer, beginning at age 14, when she was diagnosed with non‑Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Gina faced each challenge with remarkable independence and grace, often shielding her pain from those she loved. Throughout this journey she received exceptional care with a special thanks to Dr. Ron MacCormick, who recognized the uniqueness of her case and never closed the door on her.

Gina also found great joy in her annual April vacations to Florida and in watching the stunning Ross Ferry sunsets, a ritual shared with many dear “Ross Ferry Friends,” who will miss her presence and laughter.

She will be deeply missed by her special niece, Cathy Lynn (Dennis) Howley, and their children, Linden and Logan; her special nephews Joey (Keisha) Blinkhorn and their children, Morgan, Ethan, and Carver; and Tony (Nelson) Blinkhorn. Living next door to Gina and Blair created a bond of love and support that was truly unique.

Gina is also lovingly remembered by her brothers‑in‑law: Derrick (Wendy), Vaughan, Sheldon (Betty), Glenn (Edna), and Donnie Hall; and her many nieces and nephews: Melissa, Melanie, Shawn, Brittany, Alicia, Brian, Adam, Mark, Jillian, Jason, Johnathan, Jordon, and Jarrod. She leaves behind her dear Uncle Jim (Marilyn) Broderick and Aunt Mary (Cyprian) LeBlanc.

Besides her parents, Gina was predeceased by her aunts and uncles Mary (James) Lavery, Rose (Charlie) Gracie, Jack Beaton, and Helen (Mike) Kasian; her nephew George Blinkhorn; her sister‑in‑law Darlene Hall; her parents‑in‑law Lorraine (Boyde) and John Burton; and her niece and nephew, Venessa and Trevor Burton.

Gina had a beautiful and giving heart. Whether it was dropping off food, sending a thoughtful card, donating to charity, or supporting her church, she always found a way to show she cared. Her baking will be sorely missed—especially those legendary tea biscuits and her aero bar squares.

Gina worked at the Northside General with the clerical staff until she retired due to her illness. She also helped Blair run a very successful business.

Blair and the family wish to extend special gratitude to Gina’s best friend, Norma, and to her brother‑in‑law Sheldon, whose steadfast support and help meant the world to her.

Blair would also like to thank Cathy Lynn for her unwavering support and care throughout the years, especially in recent months; the Palliative Care staff for their kindness in Gina’s final days; and Dr. Michel McKeough & Louise McKeough, whose support spanned many years, Dr. Giorno, whose compassion brought comfort in difficult times, and Dr. Ritter, who kindly offered personal care even while off duty, and all the friends and family who offered love and assistance in so many little ways.

A visitation for Gina will be held from 6-8 pm, Monday, April 21, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am, Tuesday, April 22, at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or.  A reception will follow in the church hall.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Local Cancer Society or the Northside Hospital Foundation.
