Mary Lou Greenfield Obituary

Mary Lou Greenfield

North Sydney

With deepest sorrow, we announce the peaceful passing of Mary Lou Greenfield, age 81, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Born in North Sydney on December 21, 1941, she was the daughter of the late George and Dorothy (Collins) McKee.  Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her brothers Norm, Dave, George and Roy McKee, also her grandson Neil.

She is survived by her husband Garry, her children Debbie (Carrie), Glenn, Janice (Darren), Diana (Kurt) and Garry (Cindy); her ten grandchildren, her four great-grandchildren and one on the way; her brothers Bill (Marie), Ross and Joe; many nieces and nephews, her best friend Nora and her adored fur babies Sasha and Bruiser.

Mary Lou was one of a kind to say the least; always looking out for others up until her last breath.  She approached both life and death with love and devotion to God and family.  Despite the circumstances, her faith was unshakable and inspiring.

She was a Jack of all, master of none.  If something was broken, she “MacGyvered” it and if she couldn’t she relied on her son, Garry.  Aside from her ability to creatively fix anything, she was a master cook, baker and seamstress.  She took great pride in feeding people (especially her family) and providing services of love when family and friends needed something mended or hemmed.  Christmas dinners were the main event of the year for Mary Lou and she would never allow anyone to help prepare as this act of love brought her great joy.

Mary Lou could be found running the roads, on any given day, with her brothers George and Roy (until their passing) and then with her partners in crime, Janice, Ashley (granddaughter) and Nora.

She took sick quite suddenly and was assured by her granddaughter she would not be left alone.  Erika vowed to not leave her side and set up camp beside her along with daughters Debbie and Cindy.

Mary Lou lived a very grateful, faith filled and humble life; living to serve God and others and encouraging us to do the same.  The absence of her physical presence will leave a void that will never be filled but we find solace in knowing that her spirit will always be with us while she’s strolling through God’s Garden, reuniting with those who went before her.

Visitation for Mary Lou will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  A funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jason Homan officiating.  Burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.  Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.  Online condolences may be sent to the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.

God saw you getting tired, when a cure was not to be.

He wrapped his arms around you and whispered, “Come to me”

You didn’t deserve what you went through so He gave you needed rest.

God’s Garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best.
