Obituary

Michael MacDonald

Scotch Lake

With heavy hearts, we the family announce the passing of Michael Anthony MacDonald on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at the age of 72.

Born in Scotch Lake on January 10, 1951, he was the son of the late John and Beatrice (Bagg) MacDonald.  He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Anne, and sons John (Julie), Darryl (Christy) and daughter Angela.

Mike’s pride and joy were his grandchildren Miranda, Kaylee, Mackenzie, Luke and Matthew; his great-grandson, Poppy Mike’s little buddy, Blake, and his many nieces and nephews.  Mike is also survived by sisters Delia, Anne (Sandy) and Cathy (Art); brothers Joe (Anna), Vincent (Debbie) and Barry (Cheryl).  He was pre-deceased by his brother David and sister Marie.

A welder by trade, M.A. began his career at the Trenton Car Works and moved on to the Point Tupper Shipyard.  He enjoyed pointing out the D.F.O. ships that he built that are still in service today.  From there, he started his 30 plus year career with Nova Scotia Power at Seaboard, then Lingan, and finishing his career as Maintenance Supervisor at Point Aconi.  Mike was an active member of his community, playing in various hockey leagues, Georges River Dart League and Sydney Mines Bowling League.  Every year he looked forward to the CN bowing tournament.  He loved to dance and have a good time.  Mike enjoyed a good circle of long-time friends who will miss him dearly.  Mike and Anne loved the outdoors, and spent many years motorcycling, ATV-ing and camping throughout the Maritimes; a joy they have passed on to their children and grandchildren.

A special thank you to Dr. Ryan Kelly, Dr. Andrew Wawer and the nurses and staff of 5 East, Northside General Hospital.

Visitation for Mike will be held from 2–4 and 7–9 pm, Friday, August 18, at W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  A funeral mass will be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday, at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or with Rev. Chinonso Alaribe officiating.  Burial to follow in the church cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the North Sydney Food Bank.  Online condolences can be left for the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
