Michael Gregory MacNeil

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend, Michael Gregory MacNeil, age 61, on Monday February 15, 2021 at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney after a short and courageous battle with cancer.

Born in North Sydney, on July 13, 1959, Michael was the son of the late Michael B.  & Rose (Hawrylak) McNeil. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his infant niece Taylor.

Michael is survived by his siblings:  Debi (Bill) Freeborne, Baddeck; Bruce (Elgin) MacNeil, Dartmouth; Elaine (Bill) MacLean, Moncton; Lloyd MacNeil, Sydney; David (Shelley) MacNeil, Tantallon; and Joanne MacNeil, Sydney.  He was a proud uncle to Connor, Daniel, Breton, Anna, Sean, Nathan and David.

Michael was a graduate of Memorial High School and pursued his studies at Upper Air Meteorology at the Transport Canada training facility in Ottawa and worked at the High Arctic Weather Stations in Mould Bay and Resolute.  Later he became involved in the hospitality business working as a restaurant manager for many years in Toronto and Cape Breton.  He later took employment with Marine Atlantic and retired just a mere 7 months ago.

Michael grew up in North Sydney, but lived most of his adult life on the pristine shores of the Bras d’or Lakes in Shenacadie and was known to have hosted the odd beach party for friends and relatives, where he also operated a take out canteen, and could be counted upon to charm everyone he met with his wit and humor and embellished storytelling abilities.  Michael was our family’s “free spirit”.  He never stopped dreaming and was constantly sharing his ideas and visions with anyone that would listen.

Cremation has taken place.  No visitation by request.  A family gathering will be planned post the Covid-19 pandemic.  Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.

Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of one’s choice.  Online condolences to the family may be sent to:
