Muriel A. Lyons
Sydney Mines
It is with heartfelt sadness we the family announce the peaceful passing of Muriel Agnes Lyons, age 89, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on Thursday, August 15, 2024 at Miners Memorial Manor in Sydney Mines.
Muriel Agnes (Field) Lyons was born on April 27, 1935, in Goffstown, New Hampshire, USA, the sixth of seven children to the late Arthur and Bertha (Roach) Field. She spoke often of her growing-up years on “Chestnut Hill” when she enjoyed a simple life of school, chores, vegetable gardens, paper dolls and play outside.
Muriel eventually worked her way through nursing school at Atlantic Union College and the New England Sanitarium in MA. While working as a nurse at Kettering Hospital in Ohio, a good friend introduced her to an eligible bachelor named John studying for the ministry at Kingsway College. They were married shortly thereafter, moving back to MA for two years, and then northward to Canada. As a pastoral family, they moved often, living in PEI, NB, NS, and NL.
Muriel graciously hosted many visitors, lunch guests, and strangers to her many homes over the years. She worked closely with John in their pastoral work, befriending many people throughout the Atlantic provinces of Canada.
Muriel was the proud mother of two children, April Hutchful (Emmanuel) and Peter Lyons (Shari). She had 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She loved to cook, being sure to cut out as much sugar and fat as possible, and in 2010 compiled a cookbook of her favorites. She also loved to scrapbook and was well-known for drawing in the tops of heads that got cut off in photos!
In recent years, Muriel’s health began to fail. Although a fighter to the end, she finally rested on August 15, 2024, at the age of 89, with her husband John by her side. We look forward to that resurrection morning when all will be made new.
A funeral service for Muriel will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 22, 2024 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, in North Sydney with Pastor Bill Brace officiating. Burial will follow in Loch End Cemetery, Catalone. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home at 107 Pleasant Street in North Sydney.
