With heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Nelson James Johnston dearest husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother & friend. After a brief illness Nelson passed away Monday June 29th 2020 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital with his loving wife by his side, just days before his 79th birthday.

Born in North Sydney on July 3, 1941, to the late James & Caroline (Newman) Johnston. Nelson was employed with Marine Atlantic until he retired in 1996 after 36 years of service as a stevedore. He was the last surviving member of his siblings.

He is survived by his loving wife Celesta (King) Johnston of 54 years; children Cynthia Johnston (Kevin) and Crystal Johnston (Chad); grand-daughter Katie Beaton (James) & great-grandson Leland Jessome.

Nelson was a quiet & good-natured friend to all. He loved to go for his daily drives & dancing with his wife & best friends Max & Monica Prosser. Most of all he loved spending time with his wife, cherished daughters, granddaughter & great grandson. They were his pride & joy. He was a big nature lover & loved to rescue birds & enjoyed a good cup of tea with friends & family.

Nelson will be missed by many nieces & nephews, especially Jimmy Crosby who was like a son to him; by brothers in law Wayne (Ann Marie) King, Paul (Pat) King, Chickie (Linda) King, Cathy King, Kennedy (Julie) King; sisters in law June Johnston, Yvonne Johnston, Gloria Nicholson, Claudia (Earl) Warhus, Miriam (Tommy) Boudreau and Monica (David) Beaton.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by brothers Ronald, Percy, Walter and William; sisters Marie (John) Steele, Frances (George) Hillier, Queenie (Ron) Crosby; sisters in law Meleta King, Audrey (Danny) Handley, Coletta King; brothers in law Damian (Carol) King and Pius King.

As per Nelson’s wishes there will be no visitation, cremation has taken place. A private family service will take place at a later date. Donations in Nelson’s memory may be made to the Diabetes Association of Canada or a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J.
