My husband, Peter Bauer, died quietly at home on Tuesday, December 26, 2023. Born in Reichenberg, Czechoslovakia, in 1932, Peter was the cherished son of Emmy (Patzner) and Kurt Bauer and loving husband and soul mate of Sandra Kay. His happiness was in our Cape Breton life, and his wish was to stay longer, but Parkinson’s changed that path.
Over the past weeks, I’ve thought of all the ways I’ve known this wonderful, dear person who was my husband, a father and step-father. For the past 32 years, he was a jewellery designer and maker, but he was also a physicist, engineer, compulsive inventor, graphic designer, avid downhill skier, greyhound dad, animal rehabilitator, recreational sailor, long-distance swimmer, weaver, artist, bonsai enthusiast, avid sci fi reader, clothing designer, imaginative cook, author of a jewellery book, writer of children’s stories, accordion player, organ player, teacher, mentor, Fellow of the British Interplanetary Society since 1960, and he was really good at Haiku. It was a great thrill for Peter when he received The Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal last year.
We are grateful for the excellent and compassionate care and support that Peter received from Dr. John Ritter, Dr. Jamie Tribo, Dr. Stephanie Langley, Palliative Care Nurse Paulette Levin, and VON nurses, especially Marlene MacIntosh.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home at 107 Pleasant St. in North Sydney. In keeping with Peter’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Donations in his memory can be made to the Cape Breton SPCA or Two Rivers Wildlife Park. Online condolences can be left for the family by writing on the tribute wall of the obituary page at www.wjdooley.com.
