It is with incredible sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Joe Martinovic on Wednesday, October 7, 2020, in Halifax NS, at the age of 47. 

Born in Oakville, Ontario on July 4, 1973, he was the son of the late Joe and Ardena (Carey) Hawkins. He was also predeceased by his beloved grandparents Teddy and Marie Carey, his uncle Lawrence MacMullin. 

In his too short life, he served in the military, was a cook for the film industry, drove tractor trailers and was a baker (self taught), all of which he took so much pride in.  He loved taking pictures of everything, he saw so much beauty in the simplest things.  He enjoyed making everyone smile, whether it was enjoying the food he cooked or telling a funny joke.  The world lost a true gentle and kind soul.

Joe will be forever missed by his wife Tanya (Francis), his brother Cory (Julia) Hawkins, mother-in-law Janie Francis, brothers-in-law Donald and Chris, sister-in-law D’anne (Charlie) ; his second mother Denise (Billy) MacPherson, his role model Perry (Maria) Carey, his free spirited aunt Cathy MacMullin, his confidant uncle Dave Carey, his sounding board uncle Bobby (Anita) Anthony.  His cousins who were like the sisters he never had, Michelle (Devon) MacPherson and Melissa MacMullin. 

Although never blessed with biological children, Joe loved and was immensely proud of his nieces and nephews (both by blood and love), Hayden, Jax, Hope, Robert, Lizzy, Charles Jr., Holly, Bella and his god-daughter Miss Aleah.  None of which he would fail to make smile “Silly Uncle Joey”.

He will be missed by all who knew him, especially his longtime friends Joey and Jennifer, Earl, Sandy, Robert and so many more.

Visitation for Joe will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or with Rev. Michel Exalant officiating.
