It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Sandy Richard Evans, age 84, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. Sandy passed peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Friday, December 10, 2021 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born in English Harbour West, Newfoundland, on July 31, 1937, Sandy was the son of the late Albert and Phoebe (Barnes) Evans. His working career began in 1957 with the Bank of Nova Scotia, North Sydney, which then took him to various places in Nova Scotia, as well as Kingston and Toronto, Ontario. He returned to North Sydney in 1972 to work in the seafood industry, first with H.B. Nickerson and Sons, later with Seaborn Products, Bonne Bay Seafoods and finally with The Barrie Group, retiring in 2000. Sandy served as the treasurer of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney for thirty years.  He was also active in the parish as lay reader, warden and member of the parish council.  He enjoyed sailing and was active with the Junior Sailing Program at the Northern Yacht Club for a number of years. In his younger years he was a member of the #562 Cabot Squadron, Air Cadets.

Sandy is survived by his wife Esther (Jackson) Evans, by his daughters; Dawn Evans and Jennifer Evans both of North Sydney, grandchildren; Victoria, Alex, Amy, Stephanie, Kathryn and Brett, great grandsons; Aidan and Gavin, sister; Ruby (Evans) Shaw and brother Peter (Irene) Evans, both of Ontario and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents Sandy was predeceased by a sister Nina (Evans) Campbell and brother Levi Evans.

By request there will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 16, 2021 at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Canon Reg MacDonald officiating. Covid-19 restrictions will be followed with proof of vaccinations, photo identification and wearing of masks mandatory. Burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, Heart and Stoke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Junior Sailing Program NYC, or to a charity of choice.
