Obituary

Shirley Fiander

North Sydney

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Edith Fiander, aged 85, on Saturday, April 9, 2022, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in North Sydney on March 3, 1937, she was the daughter of the late John and Agnes (Strickland) Hurd. Shirley was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Shirley spent her life in her family home, proudly built by the love of her life Norm. Early in life, she spent many years working at the National Sea Fish Plant. In recent years, she volunteered at the Northside General Hospital- selling tickets and working the canteen. Over the years she partook in many craft shows, sharing the love she had for knitting, crocheting, ceramics and tole painting. She enjoyed teaching ceramics, going for drives and hanging out at Tim Hortons. She loved travelling and had a soft spot in her heart for animals, taking care of the neighbourhood cats and her best friend - her dog Binou. Her favourite past time was spending time with her family and friends.

Shirley is survived by her children Eva (the late Lloyd) Fougere, Ball’s Creek, Norman Jr. (Debbie), North Sydney, and Sheldon (Michele), Bras d’Or; her grandchildren Jason (Cassandra), Jenelle (Joey), Chad (Ashley), Ashley (Corey), Laura (Josh), and Stephanie (Trevor); great grandchildren Jayden, Jordan, Colton, Easton, Lucas, Maddison, Emerson, Claire, Theo, Jackson and Nicholas, and many nieces and nephews, as well as her fur baby Binou.

The family would like to thank the girls who helped take care of Shirley, as well as the VON, 4B staff, palliative care, and Dr. Andrew Wawer.

Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Norman; her sisters Lorraine Hurd, Violet Crane, Margaret Lewis, and Betty Hurd; her brothers Albert, Kenneth, and Bill Hurd, as well as her son-in-law, Lloyd Fougere.

There will be a visitation on Tuesday, April 19 from 1-3pm followed by a funeral service at 3pm for Shirley at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home Chapel at 107 Pleasant Street in North Sydney with Rev. Jackie Warren officiating. It will be available online through the funeral home Facebook page. There will be a reception to follow directly after the funeral service at the Clansman Motel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton SPCA, the Northside Hospital Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.

Online condolences can be left for the family on the tribute wall of the obituary page for Shirley at www.wjdooley.com.
