With heartfelt sadness we, the family, announce the passing of Shirley Joshua Hillier, age 90, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.

Born in North Sydney on March 8, 1929, Shirley was the son of the late Joshua and Jessie (Hickey) Hillier.  He was a long-time employee of Marine Atlantic, retiring after 30 years of service.  Shirley was a quiet family man who loved spending time with his wife Pauline, his children and grandchildren.  He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or.

He is survived by his loving wife Pauline (Purdie) Hillier, his three daughters Pauline (Bruce) Melanson, Patricia (Doug) Kohlsmith, Carol Ann (John Hugh) MacLean, his two sons Cecil (Darryl) Hillier, Brian (Annette) Hillier; his grandchildren Andrea (Sean), Kate Melanson, Stephanie and Elise Kohlsmith, Monique (Josh) LeBlanc, Melissa (Doug) Ivey, Josh (Courtney) Hillier, Stephen, Richard, Evan and Marlee, Michael (Alicia), Lauren and Ryan Hillier; his three great-grandchildren Hayden & Nolan LeBlanc, Sawyer Ivey;  his sister June Johnston and brother Gordon (Marg) Hillier, nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Cecil (Rita) Hillier, William (Evelyn) Hillier, sister Blanche (John) Oats, brother-in-law Walter Johnston.

A private family visitation will be held in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  Funeral mass for Shirley will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or with Rev. Peter McLeod officiating.  Burial will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bras d’Or at a later date.
