With heartfelt sadness we, the family, announce the passing of Shirley May Bishop, age 83, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in North Sydney on August 12, 1942, she was the daughter of the late William and Jesse (Luffman) Jenkins. Mom was employed in the retail industry her whole life until her retirement, having worked in many locations, including Canadian Tire, Rahey’s Grocery, the Bay and her most treasured was with Ingraham’s United, in North Sydney, where she made many lasting relationships and friendships.
Left to keep her memory alive are her children George, Dartmouth, Paul (Norma), Millville and Benny (Vicki), Saint John; her three grandsons Colin, Graham and Brandon; her brother Vic (Shirley) Jenkins; her sister Joan (Wayne) Dwyer; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents and her in-laws, George and Margaret (Penny) Bishop, mom was predeceased by her beloved husband, George, in 2021, their beautiful daughter, Nancy, in 1970, her brother Harvey (Marilyn) Jenkins and her sister, Norma Jenkins. She was also predeceased by her many Bishop in-laws whom she cherished and spent many great times with, including Harriet (Jake) Murphy, Mary (Johnny) MacIntyre, Marjorie (O’Callaghan) Bishop, Hazel (Billy) Morrison and Gordon (Nell) Penny, as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank her doctors over the years including Dr. Irene Osagie, Dr. Alexander Wawer and Dr. John Kirkpatrick. We would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff for their care and compassion to our mom at the CCU, 3A (orthopedic unit) and the An Cala Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
We would also like to acknowledge the many relatives and friends who stayed in touch and visited mom at home and in the hospital especially Barbara Martin, Elaine Boutilier, Alice Knott, Marlene Clancy and her most treasured and dear friend Jean Parker. Thank you to all!
Visitation for Shirley will be held from 1-3 pm, Thursday, September 18, 2025, at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney, with service immediately following in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Sydney Food Bank Society or a charity of one’s choice.
