Stewart Johnstone Obituary

Stewart Johnstone

Georges River

It is with immense sadness we announce the passing of (William) Stewart Johnstone, 64, on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022.  While we will miss him dearly, we are comforted knowing that he is now at home with the Lord.

Born Jan. 10, 1958 in North Sydney to Marion "Mamie" (Mulley) Johnstone and the late Roy Johnstone, Stewart graduated from Thompson High School in 1976, then went on to earn diplomas in both Business Management and Accounting from the College of Cape Breton.

After graduation, he began working for H.B. Nickerson & Sons Ltd., first in Newfoundland and Labrador, then later in PEI.  He returned to Cape Breton to work on the family farm in 1987, eventually purchasing part of it and opening his own business.  Stewart also drove a school bus for the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board before obtaining qualifications to be a Truck and Transport Mechanic, fixing the buses he once drove.  He ultimately completed his career as a Motor Carrier Inspector for the Province of Nova Scotia.

Stewart remained a farmer at heart – he enjoyed maintaining the equipment and infrastructure of the farm, rearing cows and chickens, growing pumpkins, and making hay in the summer.

He was closely involved with his church, Grace Fellowship, where he sang as a member of the worship team before coordinating the church’s sound system. Stewart was a wonderful husband and a great Dad.  He was dearly loved and respected by many.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Susan (Bungay) Johnstone; sons, Benjamin Johnstone, Georges River, Jonathan Johnstone, Vancouver, and Peter Johnstone, Halifax; mother, Mamie Johnstone; sister, Karen (Ernie) Weisner; brother, Lloyd (Elaine) Johnstone; mother-in-law, Dorothy Bungay; brother-in-law, Stephen (Jacqueline) Bungay; and many cousins, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.

Besides his father, Stewart is predeceased by his brother-in-law, Tom Burt, and his father-in-law, Clayton Bungay.

We would like to thank  the doctors, nurses, and other hospital staff for their excellent care during Stewart’s illness.

No visitation will be held. A funeral service, followed by a reception, will take place at 2:00 pm, Saturday, October 29th at Munroe Academy, 2 School St, Sydney Mines. Stewart will later be interred at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St,  North Sydney.  Online condolences can be sent to the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
