Sylvia Catherine (Ongo) Poirier Obituary

It is with broken hearts, yet profound love and gratitude for the time we were blessed to share with her, that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, wife, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Sylvia Catherine Poirier, aged 82, on June 2nd, 2026, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital's An Cala Palliative Care Unit.

Born May 3, 1944 in North Sydney, Sylvia was the daughter of the late Frank and Elsie Augot.  A gifted seamstress and embroiderer, Sylvia created countless beautiful treasures throughout her life. Her award winning quilts reflected not only her remarkable talent, but also the patience, care, and love she poured into everything she did. She also dedicated many years working in finance for the Northside General Hospital and later the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, where she formed many lasting friendships.

Some of our most treasured memories of mom were made camping together, sharing adventures, laughter, and countless games of crib. She found happiness in simple pleasures; watching sunsets, sitting at the beach with her toes in the sand and listening to the ocean waves, and spending time with those she loved. Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing Mom is reunited with Daddy and Derek once again. She is free from pain, free from oxygen tubes, and finally at peace.

Above all, Sylvia's greatest joy was her family. She is remembered uniquely by her daughters, Linda (Colin) MacKinnon and Lisa (Keith) McInnis; her sister, Carlotta Skinner, her cherished grandchildren, Robyn Whitty, Lance Poirier, Glenn, David and Kelli McInnis, Jake and Drew MacKinnon; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Besides her parents, Sylvia was predeceased by her beloved husband and soulmate, Danny, her son Derek, and many other close family and friends.

Our family wishes to express our deepest gratitude to the many people who cared for Mom with such compassion, dignity, and love throughout her journey. A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful nurses of 4D and the An Cala Palliative Care Unit, Dr. Buhariwalla, Dr. Saneea Abboud, Holly Winn, RN, Dr. Joan Salah and all the Respiratory Therapists whose kindness and professionalism brought comfort to both Mom and our family.

We are forever grateful to her devoted caregivers, Cindy, Yvonne, and Marian. Your love, friendship, and gentle care meant the world to Mom. You treated her as though she was the most important person in the world, and for that we will always be thankful. A special thank you to her beloved niece who she thought of as a daughter, Judy (Paul) Power, whose love and support brought tremendous comfort and joy to Mom over the years. We also extend our sincere appreciation to everyone at Central Court; especially her card group for always making Mom feel welcomed, valued, respected, and loved. To all who walked alongside Mom; lifelong friends Rose, Pearl, Eve, Millie, Moo, Theresa, Eldride, Betty, Ruth, Adrian and so many more I may have forgotten.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 10 am on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Holy Cross Cemetery, Johnston Road, North Sydney with Deacon Roy Smith officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sylvia's memory can be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Respiratory Department, Palliative Care or a charity of choice. Online condolences may be sent to the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.

Mommy, you will forever live in our hearts and in the countless memories we hold so dear. While we will miss you every day, we are at peace knowing that you are with Dad and Derek once again. Fly free, sweet Mommy. Breathe easy, rest peacefully, and know that you will be loved always.
