It is with inconsolable sadness that we, the family of Thelma Bridget Meaney, announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend on June 14, 2023, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by her family, after an exhausting battle with Pulmonary disease.

Born in North Sydney on Feb 17, 1936, to the late James and Gertrude Meaney, Thelma was an energetic and fun-loving soul who was quick with a joke and carried these traits with her the rest of her days.  Thelma loved the beach, skating, dancing, laughing and having fun with her siblings and friends. Thelma worked for Louis Rahey’s grocery store for a short while then went to work for Thompson and Sutherlands Ltd. as switchboard operator, where she made many friends, and finally went to work for the Nova Scotia Tourist Bureau located at The CN Marine terminal. Thelma had a great love of children and young people and was affectionately known by many as “Aunt Thelma”.

She is survived by her son Michael (Regina) Georges River; sister Teresa, North Sydney; brother Joseph (Janice Stagg), North Sydney; sister-in-law Laurie Meaney, Sydney Mines; grandchildren Molly (Cole), Bryden (Alyssa), Maggie; great-grandchild Tucker; nephews Devin, Jeff, Michael, Corey; grandnieces Alexis, Callie, Kendra, Mary, and grandnephew Jonah, and her special godson Jeff Higgins.

Besides her parents, Thelma was predeceased by her sister Mary (Russell) O’Connell, niece Nicole, sister-in-law Joan, brothers Jimmy and William, and several siblings in infancy.

Our family would like to thank the staff at Northside General Hospital for their care and compassion, and Doctor’s Ignatio and Poulis, and her family physician Dr. O’Grady.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to a children's charity of one's choice. 

Cremation has taken place.  As per Thelma’s wishes there will be no visitation.  A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, June 20, at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.  Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  Online condolences can be left for the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
