Valerie Darlene (McArthur) Nelson

It is with deep sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Valerie (McArthur) Nelson, on Tuesday April 1, 2025, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, at the age of 65.

Born in North Sydney on February 14, 1960, Valerie was the daughter of the late John and Eileen “Peek” (Musgrave) McArthur.

Valerie was a humble person who found satisfaction in the simplicities of life – enjoying the outdoors in the warm sun was one of her favourite past times.  Most of all Valerie loved her family and especially her grandchildren, who meant the world to her.

Left to mourn her passing is her husband James, son Andrew (Stacey) Nelson and daughter Dana (Brian) Young.  Valerie is also survived by her grandchildren Connor and Oliver; brothers Albert (Cecilia) McArthur, Colin (Irene) McArthur, John (Catherine) McArthur; sister Eileen McArthur; brother-in-law Bruce Gow and her many nieces and nephews.  Valerie loved her fur babies; Sadie, George and Maisie (golden retrievers), and Larry the cat – they will miss her.

Besides her parents, Valerie was predeceased by her sister Trudy Gow and her father and mother-in-law Lillian and Willis Nelson.

A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place under the direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Online condolences can be left for the family on the tribute wall of the obituary.
