Violet Young

It is with heartfelt sadness that we the family announce the peaceful passing of our beautiful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, Violet Young, age 83, on Sunday, November 19, 2023 at the Northside Community Guest Home.

Born in Sydney Mines on June 4, 1940, she was the daughter of the late William and Sara “Sadie” (Lee) Donovan. Violet was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney and for a number of years sang in the St. Joseph Celebration Choir.  In her earlier years Violet worked for Children’s Aid Nova Scotia where she took in many foster children over the years.  She was an avid baker and shared her delicious homemade bread and sweets with her family and friends. Family was everything to Violet, she loved spending time with them and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.     

She is lovingly survived by her children, Linda (Steve) Evers, Robert (Angela), Doug (Carol), Janice (Leo) Steele, Kevin, Heather (Jim Dardis) and David (Monica); also surviving are her twelve grandchildren, Chelsea, Alex, Steve, Jenine, Jake, Nicole Lee Ann,  Graham, Matthew, Jennifer, Chris, Nicole and Carly: her eight great-grandchildren Eden, Emma, Connor, Nolan, Lucas, Clayton, Mabel and George. Also, a special mention to friends of Violet and the family, Donald and Ann Marie Steele, Dave and Monica Grandy, Donnie and Sheila Grandy, Cathy and Donald Squarey; also her sister-in-law Jeanette and special niece Corena Dicks.

Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her daughter-in-law Joanne Young and her best friend Eileen Carroll. 

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff at the Northside Guest Home “MacEachern Place” for taking such excellent care of Violet during her stay there.

Visitation for Violet will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating.  Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Northside Community Guest Home, MacEachern Place.
