William “Bill” MacLeod

It is with much sadness we announce the peaceful passing of William (Bill) MacLeod with his family at his side on Sunday, May 8, 2022 at Northside General Hospital.

Born in Little Bras d’Or on December 24, 1931, Bill was the son of the late Alex & Ethel (MacKay) MacLeod.

Bill was very active in St Matthew Wesley United Church having served as Church Treasurer, Elder as well as serving on the Board of Stewards and the Men’s Club.

He was an outstanding hockey defenseman earning his ‘Golden D’ with Dalhousie University where he graduated with his science and Education Degree which led him to his teaching career of 35 years at Thompson High in the role of Teacher, Vice Principal & Principal as well as High School Hockey Coach.

Hockey was a passion playing in the Valley League, with the Ten Pennies, Northside Vics, and the Old Timers hockey teams, finally hanging up his skates for the last time when The North Sydney Forum closed. He was inducted into the Northside Sports Hall of Fame in 2013 as an Athlete and again in 2014 as a member of the Sydney Mines Ten Pennies ’67 Intermediate Champions

In addition to Hockey he was involved in Horse Racing for many years with his good friend Russell Newman and their horses Roll on Lewis and Lucky Vernon.

He is survived by his wife of almost 63 years Mary (Davison), his daughter Joan (Pierre) Cote, three beautiful grandchildren, Danielle (Daniel Planke), Matthieu & Jacqueline and his pride and joy, great grand- daughter Paityn, sister Verna, Halifax, special nephew Gerald (Roberta) MacBurnie as well as several nieces & nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister Kathryn MacBurnie, nephew Billie MacBurnie and brother Sandy.

We would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the North Side General as well for the excellent care over the last several weeks as well as Dr Bill MacDonald for his house calls.

Visitation for Bill will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m, Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Thursday at St. Matthew Wesley United Church, Leitches Creek with Marjorie Serafinus officiating. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mathew Wesley United Church or to the Canadian Cancer Society. A reception will follow the service on Thursday at the Emera Centre Community Room, King Street, North Sydney.
